Which is the First Web Based Email Service ?
In a simple line Sabeer Bhatia of India and Jack Smith founded the first free web-based email service, Hotmail, in 1995. Hotmail was commercially launched in 4 July 1996 as "HoTMaiL" on American Independence Day. So why the name HoTMaiL. Its original name and capitalization refers to HTML, the encoding language used by the World Wide Web.
It was first purchased by Steve Jurvetson and further acquired by Microsoft in 1997 for an estimated $400 million, and shortly after it was rebranded as "MSN Hotmail". According to comScore (Internet marketing research company - August 2010 stats) Hotmail is the world's largest web-based email service. Yahoo is at second and GMail is at third position. Hotmail is available in 36 languages. Upon registration on hotmail , new users can choose from a Hotmail domain address. (e.g. @hotmail.com and @live.com).
